Our engagement story

I’ve been very quiet on the old blog front for too long now, and for this, I must apologise. It’s been a crazy busy couple of months and that’s mostly been because my partner Steve and I recently got engaged!!

Steve popped the question two months ago on our two-year anniversary, and although we’d talked about it happening in the not-too-distant future, it was still a real shock when it actually happened.

We’d been out for a meal in Sheffield after work on a Monday evening, to celebrate our two-year anniversary, and after the meal, Steve was keen to get home. Me, unwittingly always wanting to ruin a surprise for myself however, insisted we stay out for a cocktail since it was such gorgeous weather. After an Aperol Spritz, Steve managed to convince me we should go home (no easy feat when there are cocktails at stake!) and when we were back in the house, we finally swapped anniversary cards.

I’d provided Steve with a soppy message and a selection of chocolates. He, on the other hand, gave me a wonderful card with a cryptic message at the bottom that said: ‘Go to the place where your head is last thing at night and first thing in the morning (not your shoulders or neck’). Intrigued, I set off for the bedroom with our cat Theo following closely behind (he’ll do anything for a treasure hunt – especially if there could be Dreamies – or a dead mouse – at the end of it).

Sadly for Theo but luckily for me, there were no mice or Dreamies in the bedroom but instead, a box of chocolates lay on the bed with another clue on top that read: ‘It’s where you always try to send me before I go to bed.’ Instantly, I knew to go to the bathroom because, like a good ball and chain¬†in training, I’m always nagging Steve to brush his teeth before he goes to bed.

Sure enough, stuck on the bathroom cabinet was another note that said: ‘It’s right under your nose (if you were in Venice).’ Instantly, I was transported back 18 months to our romantic trip to Venice, in which we ended up buying Venetian masks, because it was the Venice Carnival whilst we were there and everyone was walking around with masks on. Like the sheep we are, we joined in the fun. Steve bought a mask with a huge nose on it – hence the clue – and we ended up bickering whilst trying to take a selfie on a bridge because I was apparently inadvertently knocking his nose whilst trying to get my selfie stick in position.

Our trip to Venice and the famous Venetian masks.

Our trip to Venice and the famous Venetian masks – sexy, yes?

Anyway, back to the treasure hunt. Next to the Venetian masks in the guest bedroom was a wrapped gift that felt like a big text book and on it, a note saying: ‘Open this downstairs’. Suddenly, it dawned on me that something big may be about to happen so trying to outrun my racing thoughts, I darted downstairs and into the dining room, where Steve had lit candles, laid out flowers and knelt on bended knee, brandishing a ring.

‘Will you marry me?’ he said.

The rest is a little bit of a blur for me. I remember feeling self-conscious that I was the only one stood up in the room – even though there was only myself, Steve and the cat in the house – so I got down on one knee myself and said ‘yes’. Then, we celebrated with champagne that we’d saved from when we moved into our home together last year, we phoned family, and I said ‘Oh wow’ and ‘I can’t believe it’ a lot.

Oh, and the present that was wrapped up under the Venetian masks that I was told to open downstairs? It was a stack of wedding magazines – a lovely, thoughtful touch from Steve!

I find it hard to be mushy publicly, but I’m so happy to be marrying a¬†wonderful man and look forward to the next step in our adventure together.

So, there you have it – the reason for my blogging tardiness these past few months. Now that the dust has settled, I plan to keep in touch via the blog a little more frequently with life updates, a few – but not too many – wedding revelations, and of course, the rest of my A to Z of baking challenge.

Thank you for reading! Jenny x
